A drainage swale is an exposed vegetated channel that collects water stores it temporarily and returns it to the ground gradually to reduce runoff into a road or your yard. Drainage Swales are used to direct heavy surface water flow in extreme rain events to ensure nearby structures and landscape are not affected.
Area drains and catch basins collect surface runoff during rain events. A catch basin is a type of area drain as well as the holding area for water that comes from area drains. A catch basin minimizes clogging by trapping sticks, litter, sediment, and other larger matter in the inlet grate so that unwanted water has a place to go.
